Creatively use and respond to change: First CEE Permaculture Convergence in Slovakia

Between July 28th and August 1st, 2025, something truly special unfolded in the heart of Central Europe. Permaculturists from Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Poland, Austria, Ukraine, Hungary — and even an amazing band, Formidable Vegetable, from as far as Australia — gathered at ŽiTo v Sýpke, Slovakia, for the first-ever Central and Eastern European (CEE) Permaculture Convergence.

This landmark event wasn’t just a convergence of people — it was a convergence of stories, strategies, music, and seeds of a new regional permaculture identity.

A celebration of diversity and learning

The program was as diverse as our ecosystem of participants. From agroforestry techniques and forest gardening, to Rozum’s Bed, social permaculture design, charcoal-making, sewing circles, and deep conversations around social structures design and gender roles in regenerative cultures — there was something for every learner, doer, and dreamer.

One of the most heartening aspects of the convergence was how intergenerational it was. Families arrived together, and children were everywhere — playing, exploring, and actively engaging in hands-on learning about permaculture. It was a beautiful reminder that the next generation is not just watching, but already participating in the creation of resilient, regenerative systems.

In the evenings, the energy transformed into something even more vibrant with drums and singing. One highlight was the unforgettable concert by Formidable Vegetable, the Australian permaculture band. Their music lit up the night — good vibes, deep lyrics, and joyful dancing under the stars. It reminded us that culture is just as essential in permaculture as design.

Strengthening regional ties

Beyond the workshops and celebration, the convergence served as a rare and valuable platform for inter-country learning and collaboration. Participants shared not only best practices but also the very real challenges we face across our national contexts — be it policy hurdles, climate pressures, or cultural perceptions.

Crucially, umbrella permaculture organizations from across the region met, exchanged knowledge, and began co-creating strategic next steps. We laid the groundwork for greater cooperation that respects both local specificity and shared regional strengths.

The meta message: A growing regional voice

This convergence was more than a gathering—it was a reflection of a shifting story in Europe.

For decades, the narrative of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) has often centered on “catching up” with the West. But times are changing. The difference between East and West is no longer a simple binary. Our region is now being called to articulate its own identity, strengths, and voice — not just for our own benefit, but as a vital contributor to the future resilience of Europe as a whole.

Permaculture offers a powerful framework for this shift. It’s a design science rooted in care for the earth, care for people, and fair share. It helps communities respond to complexity with creativity, and to crisis with collaboration. In the face of a global polycrisis, permaculture’s relevance is only growing — and CEE countries are ready to step into a more active role.

Looking ahead

This was the first CEE Permaculture Convergence, but certainly not the last. The spirit of collaboration, celebration, and deep connection has left us all deeply inspired and energized.

We’re thrilled to announce that Hungary will host the next CEE Permaculture Convergence in 2026. We can’t wait to continue this dialogue, deepen relationships, and further shape our shared vision for a just, resilient, and regenerative future in Central and Eastern Europe — and beyond.

Let’s creatively use and respond to change, together!
